Where there’s food, there’s community. But when there’s no easy access to good food, communities can’t thrive. Foodchain is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing access to locally sourced, fresh food for everyone in Lexington. Through innovative programming that spans in-kitchen education, aquaponic farming, and extensive community outreach, Foodchain empowers individuals to understand, appreciate, and access nutritious food. Their commitment to building a resilient local food system resonated deeply with our focus on fostering community well-being and increasing access.
The Murry Foundation has been a key partner since Foodchain's early days, first helping to equip their initial kitchen — a crucial step in launching their culinary and community meal programs. This early support enabled Foodchain to address local food insecurity effectively. Later, as a cornerstone sponsor of Foodchain’s "Nourish" program during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation helped provide vital prepared meals and fresh produce to families in need, highlighting the impact of community-driven solutions.
Continuing this impactful collaboration, the Murry Foundation now supports Foodchain's ambitious "Neighborhood Green Grocery" project. This initiative will establish a community-owned grocery store in an underserved area, improving access to affordable, fresh food and fostering local economic growth. By accepting WIC and offering convenient options like frozen meals, alongside a welcoming community space, the "Neighborhood Green Grocery" embodies the shared vision of building a healthier, more connected Lexington.
