Children’s museums are among the fastest-growing cultural institutions in the country — and for good reason. They spark imagination, inspire learning, and bring families together. Since 1990, the Lexington Children’s Museum has served as a cornerstone for exploration and play in downtown Lexington. But over time, the space struggled to keep up with the needs of a growing and changing community. Exhibits became outdated, programming lost its spark, and the building’s location lacked accessibility for many families.
We wanted to help. In 2022, we partnered with the museum’s new executive director, Colby Ernest, whose bold vision is to completely reimagine what the museum could be. To help make that vision tangible, we funded an architectural study with a leading children’s museum design firm. We’re also working closely with local partners to ensure the new space stays rooted in downtown and reflects the culture and history of Lexington, while offering a modern, inclusive experience for all.
This project is about more than bricks and mortar — it’s about building belonging. The Murry Foundation supports the museum’s free sensory hours for families with sensory sensitivities and remains committed to creating spaces that are accessible, welcoming, and enriching for everyone. Together, we’re helping transform the museum into an educational and cultural hub that will serve children, families, and educators for generations to come.
